A WOMAN CALLED ANGEL
Alfred Nyagaka Nyamwange
The stories in this collection span three and a half decades, exploring the challenges and themes that shape a person’s journey of growing up and growing old in Africa.
They move fluidly between the rural and the urban, youth and age, poverty and wealth, the physical and the metaphysical—capturing the full spectrum of generational experiences. The plots, conflicts, characters, and themes are drawn from the tales, lives, fantasies, and personal dreams of the people—and of the author himself.
These stories give voice to triumphs and disillusionments alike. Through them, readers may see themselves reflected—whether in empathy, amusement, irritation, or dismissal—as they encounter the fears, hopes, and banalities of characters from all walks of life. Even in despair, the laments of hope rise like birdsong, defying the darkest clouds.
Alfred Nyagaka Nyamwange was born in Kisii County. A teacher by profession, he is currently holdinh a PhD in Literature.
He is a passionate promoter of language, literature, and culture, as shown through this anthology A Woman Called Angel, as well as his other works: the novels The Blood Stains and The Broken Column, the children’s story The Smell of New Shoes, and the long poem The Girl of Red Beauty.
His poetry has also been featured in various anthologies, including Kistretch (7th and 8th editions), Shackles of Pain, I Can't Breathe, Musings During the Time of Pandemic, and Black Rootedness. He has contributed chapters and articles to numerous acclaimed books and journals.
